    ⟪그림과의 대화_1막: 그림에게 묻는다⟫, 김소연 개인전

    열 길 물속은 알아도 한길 사람 속은 모른다는 옛말에 공감하지 않을 수 있을까. 살면서 가장 많은 경험을 하는 상대가 사람이면서도 알면 알수록 어려운 게 사람이라는 말은 어렵지 않게 들린다. 생각해 보면 모르는 것이 꼭 어렵거나 부정적인 것이 아닌데도 그런 상황에 직면하면 일종의 두려움, 걱정 등 유쾌하지 않은 감정들이 동반된다. ‘모르는, 알 수 없는’ 것들이 나를 어렵게 만드는 것은 ‘모른다’는 그 자체보다도 그 이면에 내가 경험하고 안다고 생각했던 것들, 나도 모르게 판단하고 기대했던 것들이 그렇지 않게 되는 두려움에 있는 것이 아닐까.

  • 김소연은 그 두려움을 이기려 붓을 들었는지도 모른다. 삶은 예측할 수 없고 예측한 대로 흘러가지 않는다고 말하는 김소연은 젖은 종이를 자신이 알 수 없는 세상에 비유했다. 어디로 번져나갈지 예상할 수 없는 젖은 종이 위에 같은 형상을 반복적으로 그리며 그림에게 묻는다. 묻는 행위-그리는 행위-를 하면 할수록 처음 그려진 형상은 점차 퍼져나가고 알아볼 수 없게 희미해져 나간다. 최초의 형상은 더 이상 중요하지 않다. 모든 게 함께 어우러져 있다. 방향도 목적도 없는 젖은 형상을 그녀는 꽤 오래 기다린다. 묻고 기다림의 반복 끝에 드러나는 마지막 형상은 처음 보는 형상이다. 정답도 어긋남도 없다. 오로지 그림과 김소연의 대화가 남는다. 이번 전시에서 김소연은 그동안의 그림과의 대화들을 처음 공개한다. 다양한 삶의 경험을 지나 이제서야 자신만의 언어로 세상에 대한 물음과 고민을 풀어놓는 그녀에게 그림과 관객은 또 어떤 것들을 보여줄지 궁금해진다.

    Can you ever disagree with the old saying, “the human mind is unfathomable”? We oftentimes hear that it is us humans that we find it more difficult to deal with as we know more about each other although we experience humans most frequently in our lives. If we consider it closely, not knowing does not necessarily mean being difficult or negative, but when we confront such situations, a range of unpleasant feelings, such as fears and worries, are accompanied. The reason why “the things that go beyond our awareness or capability to be aware” make us feel uncomfortable may lie in worrying of the things that we thought we had experienced and known and the things that we have inadvertently judged or expected may turn otherwise, instead of the fact that “we actually do not know.”

  • Soyeun Kim may have stroked her brush to fight her fear. Kim, who has stated that life cannot be expected and it does not flow as expected, compared wet paper with the world that she cannot grasp. By depicting the same figures on the wet paper with which it is difficult to expect where the paints would spread, she asks questions to paintings. As she performs an act of asking questions—an act of painting, the initially drawn figure is no longer important. Everything is mingled together. Kim waits for quite some time for such wet figures without any directions or purposes. The figure that finally appears at the end of questioning and waiting is the initial figure. There are no right answers or wrong ones. Only the dialogues between paintings and Kim remain. She opens the dialogues between the paintings to date to the public for the first time at this exhibition. The expectation is to see what the paintings and the viewers would show to Kim who finally gets to unfold the questions and concerns about the world with her unique language elucidated by her various life experiences.
